國際電工委員會（International Electrotechnical Commission)，簡稱IEC。IEC成立于1906年，至今已有90多年的歷史。它是世界上成立最早的國際性電工標準化機構，負責有關電氣工程和電子工程領域中的國際標準化工作。IEC下設95個技術委員會，80個分技術委員會。
IEC的95個技術委員會中，從事電機相關標準研究與制定的技術委員會為旋轉機械技術委員會，其代號為TC2。TC2主要從事旋轉機械性能、測試等標準的制定，對旋轉機械自身的用電電壓、輸出功率和尺寸沒有明確的限制。但是，TC9（鐵路電氣設施技術委員會）涵蓋的牽引電機、TC69(電動汽車和電動工業卡車技術委員會）涵蓋的電機、小汽車和商用車使用的電機以及空間飛行器使用的電機的相關標準的制定不在TC2的工作范圍。
